Favourite game: RollerCoaster Tycoon

This week we continue our series of posts where each member of the team write about one of their favourite games. Today’s post is by Karianne.

One of my favorite games is the first Roller Coaster Tycoon. The game is about building and operating your own amusement park, and there are many things you need you need to take care of to succeed. I got the game for the first time when I was around 12 years old, and was one of the first games that made me sit for hours in front of the screen.

Rct-boxMe and my friends often played together, where we had to wait for our turn to play, and watched the others play with excitement. RollerCoaster_Tycoon_ScreenshotWhat I like about the game is that you have a lot of freedom to build what you want, and there’s always something to do. You choose one of the scenarios the game offers, which have different difficulties and objectives. When you complete all the scenarios, you unlock a final map called «Mega Park» where you can relax and play the way you want, since there are no objectives to follow. Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, which looks much like the previous game, also has a feature where you can build your own level and scenario from scratch. This is a nice feature; to have even more freedom to play around as a level designer. There are many unique attractions you can build and change acoording to what type of amusement park you want.

The game is easy to understand, but at the same time you will constantly experience challenges like demanding guests, attractions breaking down, garbage laying around and guests that don’t find the exit. The concept about making your own amusement park appeals to many, both children and adults.RT_Diamond_heightsThe graphics and animations may look simple today, but work very nicely and fit the game well. It looks colorful and inviting, like an amusement park often looks.
