About a month ago we wrote that our beloved sound guy, Jory Prum had been hurt in a terrible motorcycle accident.

After a month in the hospital, Jory sadly passed away on Saturday.  In addition to having worked on Shadow Puppeteer he was a great friend to many of our team members, and our grief is hard to bear as we struggle to understand what has happened.

Jory had an immense knowledge and skill in audio production, but we will miss him and remember him first and foremost for his generous and warm spirit. He would always find the time to listen, counsel and help. Within the Norwegian games industry he was a prominent figure, and would always introduce our humble studios to partners abroad to raise the quality of our games.

Jory leaves a big hole in our midst, and in our hearts. He will be sorely missed and remembered. The image is from the cruise ship game jam “Splash”, – the last games event Jory attended in Norway.

 

Tom Phillips at Eurogamer wrote a eulogy about Jory and his life and work:

Acclaimed game audio wizard Jory Prum has passed away, aged just 41.

Prum’s name may not be immediately familiar, but his work will be. His career saw him record voice over, music and orchestral scores for more than 100 games, including LucasArts’ Knights of the Old Republic, Double Fine’s Broken Age and Telltale’s The Walking Dead.

More recently, his work can be heard in the Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango remasters. For the latter, Prum was able to retrieve the original audio for the game and, with ex-LucasArts composer Peter McConnell, record its new orchestral score.

Double Fine founder Tim Schafer broke the news of Prum’s death over the weekend, after word spread that Prum had been involved in a serious motorcycle accident.

Those who knew him were “stunned and deeply saddened”, Schafer added.

Prum’s career began at LucasArts, and from there bridged over to Telltale Games beginning with its Tales of Monkey Island and Sam & Max series. He also worked stints with EA and Maxis for Sim City 4 and The Sims 2, and then with Double Fine for games such as Brütal Legend.

His work extended onto the big screen, too, and with his own recording studio worked on movies such as Lost in Translation, Adaptation and the Oscar-winning Pixar short For the Birds.

But Prum will be best remembered for his award-winning work with games, and for the huge number of titles his talent touched.

  1. I worked w/ Jory on the Sam and Max series( Harry Molman), and he was one of the truly nicest people I’ve ever met in the industry. He was a very low-key and humble dude whose heart was only matched by his kindness and innate decency. I just found this out-had no idea he was gone, and I am shocked and very saddened to find out hed passed away. Love abides, but wow. What a shame. Jory was one of the good guys. Gone but not forgotten . Rest in peace, Jory, very sad and sorry you had to go.
